ChartWatch..Lupe Tops Charts! Pharoahe Monch Drops!

Lupe Fiasco’s Lasers continues to ride high coming in at number 3 this week on the charts.  Lasers appears to be selling on Lupe’s name alone because I don’t see many people that are excited about the music on the album.  Are fans excited about Lupe?  Yes.  The music? Not so much.  At least these sales should give him the ability to put out another album.  So far the album has moved around 250,000 copies.

Marsha Ambrosious dips a little but her debut album still manages to sell 28,000 copies and take the number ten spot on the countdown.  Late Nights & Early Mornings has move around 165,000 copies to date.

Nicki Minaj adds 25,000 more copies to the already platinum sales of her debut album, Pink Friday.  This week the Young Money MC lands at number 13.

Eminem continues to rack up sales, moving 20,000 copies of his latest album, Recovery, and bringing the albums total sales well over triple platinum.

Kanye West recently gave fans a free performance at SXSW in an abandoned Power Plant, showcasing most of the music from his fifth album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.  This week the album sells 11,000 copies, takes the 35th spot on the countdown, and racks up a sales total of around 1,090,000.  Below is some “reasonably steady” video of some of the footage which is starting to appear on the internet from the packed show.

That leaves Raekwon and his latest, Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang, to round out the countdown at number 45.  This week the Chef adds 9,400 copies to his sales numbers bringing to totals to around 38,000.

Dropping This Week
First up this week is Pharoahe Monch who releases his third solo album W.A.R (We Are Renegades).  The album features Idris Elba, Immortal Technique, Vernon Reid, Showtyme, DJ Boogie Blind, Styles P, Phonte, Mela Machinko, Mr. Porter, Jean Grae, Royce Da 5’9”, Citizen Cope and Jill Scott.  Pharoahe Monch says that he is bringing that ‘93-‘94 Hip Hop sound so if you’re looking for something lyrical then pick this one up.

Next up is Gucci Mane who comes back with his new album The Return of Mr. Zone 6Most of the production on this album is handled by Drumma Boy with guest features including Birdman, Waka Flocka Flame, OJ Da Juiceman, Lil Capp, Chill Will, Whoo Da Kid, Rocko, Webbie, Master P, Wale, 8Ball, and Slim Dunkin.

Is Kanye’s Power “Limitless?” (Movie Review)!

As the theme song to the paranoia fueled action thriller “Limitless,” Kanye West’s  “Power” seem to make perfect bedfellows for the rap star whose swagadocious ego seems to be filled with limitless bravado.  The film, which stars Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro is about an unsuccessful writer named Eddie, played by Cooper, whose life is transformed by a top-secret “smart-drug” that allows him to use 100% of his brain and become a perfect version of himself.
Damn! does Kanye have this pill? As a producer and songwriter some would argue hell yes! Ye taps into 100% of his brain power to create musical mastery at its finest. But in the movie the drug known as NTZ is not without its adverse affects, could that be what’s wrong with Ye when he has his outbursts? Does he have his own secret stash of NTZ? Microsoft Splits $1B Media Duties Between Starcom MediaVest, Universal McCann!

Microsoft who has completed its media-agency review and will split duties on its estimated $1 billion media account between two agencies, Publicis Groupe's Starcom Mediavest, which will handle strategy and planning, and incumbent Universal McCann, which will continue to manage Microsoft's media planning and buying outside of North America. Starcom MediaVest will handle buying in the U.S. and Canada, while Universal McCann will handle some 35 markets outside of North America.
Microsoft, which also serves as a vendor for most media shops, ranks No. 32 on Ad Age's 100 Leading National Advertisers report, with its domestic advertising budget alone totaling more than $1.1 billion. Though Universal McCann still remains on the roster, the loss of media-buying duties to Starcom in Microsoft's key North American market is sure to put a significant revenue dent in the Interpublic Group of Cos. agency, which has worked with the marketer for more than a decade. Check more update on....

Ope Banwo and the team at Stingomania entertainment might be giving the goose pimple when Da Grin’s biopic is premiered in April. The trailer was uploaded to Youtube a few hours ago and from what is seen, they might have done justice – as they seem to have delivered on the production and technical end.
A promotional flier was released earlier and it was frowned at but a new one emerged. The movie project is supported by Late rapper’s parent, record label and colleagues – Jaywon and Kenny St. Brown.

Young Buck Indicted On Gun Charge; Facing 10 Years In Prison!

According 'AllHipHop News' Rapper Young Buck is facing serious jail time after being indicted yesterday (March 7th), and was charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a .40 caliber pistol and ammunition. Nashville's WSMV Channel 4 reports that prosecutors unsealed the indictment yesterday, for an incident that occurred around August 3rd, just as Federal agents raided his Hendersonville home over a $300,000 tax dispute with the IRS.
Young Buck has pleaded not guilty to the gun possession charge and has been released on $100,000 bond. The rapper has a 2004 felony conviction for stabbing a man named Jimmy Lee Johnson during a fight at the Vibe Awards, after Johnson punched superstar producer Dr.Dre.  As a result of this conviction and the pending gun possession charge, Young Buck is facing up to ten years in prison. The rapper was also forced to surrender his passport.

Fıve Things You Can't Do in Advertising if You Want to Stay on Right Side of the Law!

When advertisers have a problem with a competitor's claims, they don't have to go to court. They can turn to the National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus, a self-regulating body established in 1971 to deal with false or misleading advertising claims. The NAD can also file a challenge against an advertiser on its own. In 2010, the NAD handled 145 cases and has handled thousands over the years for some of the biggest brands out there. "The NAD is applying the most important principles of advertising law and serve a consumer-protection function. NAD has reviewed advertising claims that were made in product placement (inserted into the dialogue of a TV show or a movie), claims made in YouTube videos, in blog postings and in press releases. So now you know.

Below, a few rules established by NAD precedent

FACEBOOK AND YOUR TWITTER COUNT
People can generally say whatever they want on their Facebook page and Twitter stream. But not advertisers. In July 2010, the NAD recommended that the Liquid HCG Diet product discontinue its weight-loss claims in electronic advertising, specifically pointing out Twitter and Facebook in the decision. The NAD also asked that HCG modify its consumer testimonials. It's no wonder the NAD felt inclined to do so -- a quick check of the HCG Diet Facebook page shows it has more than 62,000 likes. In comparison, Nutrisystem has about 11,000 and Jenny Craig about 25,000.

COMEDY IS NO EXCUSE
Just because it's funny doesn't mean there isn't a serious claim being made that has to be substantiated. In 2006, the NAD concluded that the crash demonstration in the Mercedes-Benz GL commercial overstated the actual crash-resistance and safety performance of the car and recommended that the commercials be modified. The commercial showed another vehicle crashing into the Mercedes and bouncing off it, with no damage to the Mercedes.

EVEN CARTOON BEARS MUST BE HONEST
The Charmin Ultra Bears case, decided last year, established that product demonstrations must accurately show a product's performance, characteristics or features -- even if it's a cartoon demonstration. Much to the chagrin of Procter & Gamble and to the amusement of challenger and rival Kimberly-Clark Corp -- as well as the press -- the NAD decided that the animated demonstration of a Charmin Bear using toilet paper overstated extent of product superiority and did not accurately reflect consumer-testing results. Therefore, the Charmin Bears, which first appeared for the P&G brand in 2000, must prominently display at least a few specs of cartoon toilet paper on their rears to accurately reflect that Charmin leaves fewer pieces behind, but not no pieces behind.

NATURAL AS NATURE
In 1998, the NAD recommended that Tom's of Maine avoid claiming that its Natural Mouthwash is 100% or completely natural and include in advertising that the product contains an ingredient that is not inherently "natural" or sourced from nature. Attempts to find this ingredient were futile, but the case made its point. Following that case, the NAD had to basically go through the thesaurus of adjectives relating to claims of nature and insist to companies that if they say their product is "biodegradable" -- like Clorox did with its Green Works Natural Cleaning Wipes -- it actually has to degrade. Last year, even Whole Foods favorite Seventh Generation was told to discontinue or modify various safety and "natural" claims.

SALE MATERIALS AND INSTRUCTIONS ARE ADS, TOO
A couple of cases helped the NAD draw the line between commercial and noncommercial speech. Last year, the NAD told Smart Technologies that the marketing materials included with its whiteboards directed to sales personnel to "educate" them count as national advertising and therefore must be substantiated just like any kind of ad. And in 2007, the NAD told Dyson that it couldn't hide behind an "instructional" ad on YouTube -- the video depicted a comparative product demonstration, and the NAD deemed it adv

Coca-Cola Launches Global Music Effort to Connect With Teens!

A year ago, the beverage giant unveiled its 2020 Vision, which calls for the company to more than double system revenue to $200 billion, as well as servings to more than 3 billion per day by the year 2020. To accomplish that, the company will need to attract teens -- lots of them.

By 2020, one-third of the world's population, or 2.5 billion people, will be younger than 18. And in the next 10 years, teens in the U.S. will number 31 million. To that end, Coca-Cola is readying its largest teen-focused campaign to date, Coca-Cola Music. Given the rapid growth of the teen market globally, Coca-Cola plans to take the campaign to more than 100 markets. Six markets, China, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan and the U.S., will house half of the teen population by 2020. Coca-Cola has been focused on making its efforts more global in nature, something it's done for its Olympics and World Cup efforts. The company views teens broadly as 13- to 19-year-olds, which requires the marketer to "look for the highest common denominator. In addition to 24hr Session, Coca-Cola has partnered with One Night Only, an emerging band in the U.K., and Taio Cruz, a British singer and songwriter. One Night Only has written and recorded a new track called "Can You Feel It," which features Coca-Cola's signature five-note melody. It will be the soundtrack for a new global spot from Wieden & Kennedy, Amsterdam. Mr. Cruz will be working with artists selected by teens in various markets on a track he has created.
"We are working hard at Universal to bring our artists closer to their fans through unique experiences, and we believe that Coca-Cola Music is the perfect, innovative platform to continue this," Andrew Kronfeld, exec VP-international marketing, Universal Music Group International, said in a statement. "The artists taking part in the program are all excited to be part of opening up the creative process to teens around the world, and allowing their fans an exclusive chance to get involved with making great new music. "Indeed, Coca-Cola execs across the board, including CEO Muhtar Kent, have been trumpeting the importance of teens recently. "Our success in growing our sparkling category today depends on our ability to grow and connect with teens, the generation of tomorrow," Mr. Kent said at the Consumer Analyst Group of New York conference last month.

FELA! MAKES HISTORIC ARRIVAL IN LAGOS, NIGERIA APRIL 20-25, 2011!

TONY® AWARD WINNING SENSATION
FELA!
MAKES HISTORIC ARRIVAL IN LAGOS, NIGERIA APRIL 20-25, 2011
The hit Broadway musical about the life and music of Nigerian performer and political activist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti is scheduled to be performed in his home town of Lagos, Nigeria making it the first Broadway show to be performed in Sub-Saharan Africa (its gonna be big).

FELA!, the landmark Broadway musical, which won three Tony Awards (Broadway’s highest honor) including Best Choreography (Bill T. Jones), is coming to Lagos from April 20th to 25th.  It will be performed at the prestigious Eko Hotel’s New Expo Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria. This critically lauded musical will star its original Broadway cast with Sahr Ngaujah reprising his Tony-nominated role of Fela Kuti with music provided by the internationally renowned Antibalas as well as other members of the New York City Afro-beat community.
Concurrently with the Broadway production, FELA! opened and triumphed at London’s Royal National Theater for a three-month sold-out run.  That production was nominated for three Olivier Awards, London theatre’s highest honor, including Best Musical, Best Actor (Sahr Ngaujah) and Best Choreography (Bill T. Jones). This Nigerian engagement will be the first since the closing of the Broadway and London productions and the NTLive performance which was broadcast to in 370 cinemas worldwide.

The aim of FELA! in Lagos is to unite and connect Africans in spirit and unity, to serve as a catalyst for cultural revival in Nigeria, and to celebrate Fela Kuti, for the contribution he has made to Nigeria and the world. FELA! depicts the true story of the legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, whose soulful Afro beat rhythms ignited the spirit of empowerment and cultural awareness in a generation.  It is a tale of courage, passion and love featuring Kuti’s captivating music and the visionary direction and choreography of Tony Award winner, Bill T. Jones. FELA! in Lagos is being produced by a Nigerian production company, Broken Shackles in conjunction with Lagos State Government.

Upon its Broadway opening Ben Brantley of The New York Times wrote, “There should be dancing in the streets.  The hot (and seriously cool) energy that comes from the musical gospel preached by the title character of Fela! feels as if it could stretch easily to the borders of Manhattan and then across a river or two.  There has never been anything on Broadway like this production.”  The New York Post’s Elisabeth Vincentelli cheered, “There’s enough energy to short circuit Con Ed.”  David Cote of Time Out New York, in giving it 5 stars (out of 5) raved, “Fela! is more than a musical; it’s an ecstatic phenomenon.”  And Jennifer Farrar from the Associated Press exclaimed, “An exuberant celebration!”

The English critics were equally effusive after the London premiere of FELA! One critic, Baz Bamigboye of The Daily Mail, summed up the critical sentiment with his review saying FELA! is a “groundbreaking show that shook Broadway and London’s Royal National Theatre to the rafters. Getting Brits to get on their feet and ‘get loose’ as Bill T. Jones puts it, was a rare feat.  FELA! pulled it off by sheer exuberance and theatrical showmanship. At the same time, FELA! explored the soul of an artist and the darkness of a government that tried to block what Fela’s beam exposed.”

In addition to rave reviews from criticsFELA! has also won numerous awards and received standing ovations from such personalities as Mick Jagger, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Spike Lee, Ben Okri, Janet Jackson, Denzel Washington, Professor Wole Soyinka, Robert De Niro, and Hugh Jackman.  First lady Michelle Obama, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and President Obama’s Head of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano are but three of the dignitaries who have embraced this show.
Bill T. Jones, director and choreographer of FELA!, was recently honored with the prestigious Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts award along with Sir Paul McCartney and Oprah Winfrey. The Kennedy Center Honors are awarded annually for exemplary lifetime achievement in the performing arts. FELA!also won two Astaire Awards for its cast and choreography.

FELA! on Broadway was conceived by Bill T. Jones, Jim Lewis and Stephen Hendel. Its producers include the entertainment legends Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter and Will & Jada Pinkett Smith.
A spokeswoman for Broken Shackles suggests that “with a series of media partners and sponsorships, FELA! in Lagos will be the most talked about show in Nigeria for years to come. We have created sponsorship, branding and advertising opportunities for those who wish to be a part of this historic theatrical event.”

Behind The Scenes With Snoop Dogg & D’Banj Plus Hints of Projects With Jay-Z, Kanye West & Beyonce!

Mr endowed has made headlines across Africa which means it might be the biggest thing to have happened this 2011 until i see otherwise. Dbanj mentioned possibilities of Donjazzy producing for the likes of Beyonce, JayZ and Kanye. Now this gets really cool because just 2 days ago, Kanye West(Who rarely tweets anyone) tweeted Dbanj and Donjazzy which certainly means some kind of work involving the two parties is ongoing.
kanyedbanjtweet VIDEO: Behind The Scenes With Snoop Dogg & DBanj Plus Hints of Projects With Jay Z, Kanye West & Beyonce
Now if this supposed collabo turns out to be true, valid and solid, it’ll definitely be a huge boost to Nigerian music in general. My opinion (i am so proud of that country).
